With all the recent buzz about blowing bubbles that freeze, we just had to try it. The temperature was below freezing. The bubbles formed easily and were blown away. We tracked those that landed near us. Most of them popped right away. A few lingered, and they did so for a much longer time than they would normally during the Summer. None of them got that plastified look like some people have been experiencing and posting about, except that when my son popped one of them, he said it felt ‘like soft plastic’. I had not even told him that it would harden, so this was his own observation.
We tried again, and we got similar results. Since none of them got that plastified look, I gave my son the go-ahead to pop one of the bubbles and caught it on camera. Again, he said it felt like ‘soft plastic’, and I was able to catch a photo (below) of some bits of the bubble breaking off. They look like tiny pieces of plastic wrap. These are circled in red in the photo, and to see them better, enlarge the photo by clicking on it. We also watched another bubble that had attached itself to a metal poll and just stood there (photo also below). Actually, it drooped, and it did so for several minutes. I am pretty certain that if we had been in warm weather that the bubble would have popped and not just droop like that for an extended period of time.
We are expecting another cold streak in a week’s time, so we will wait and redo the experiment at that time. We will try harder to catch the bubbles on the wand and we will be more patient before going ahead and popping the bubble. If our results are different, we’ll let you know.
